Biographical details:
Albert embarked HMT Gaika at Adelaide on 6 August 1918 and disembarked at London on 12 October, by which time peace had been negotiated. He left Southampton on 22 January 1919 for France where he was transferred to the 43rd Battalion at Le Havre on 12 April. Albert returned to Australia per Ulysses on 23 July and was discharged on 16 September.
Albert also served in World War Two, his service number being S34777(1).
Other Anecdotal Information:
Albert and Edith were heavily involved with the Monash community. They contributed significantly to the Roman Catholic Church Building Fund and the Berri Red Cross in November 1924(1). Albert was president of the Berri Rowing Club in 1937(2). Edith was involved with the Infant Welfare Club. Albert was instrumental in encouraging the National & Social Reconstruction Movement coming to South Australia(3)
Fruit Block Details:
He occupied Block 730 of 36.75 acres on 1 November 1922 and surrendered it on 23 January 1941.The property had a 10,000 gallon tank and a stone two-roomed house with an iron roof. The house was valued at 300 pounds.
The block also comprised 3 acres of gordos, 8.1 acres of sultanas, 4.25 acres of malagas, 0.3 acres of mixed trees, 1 acre of apricots,0.3 acres of oranges and 19 dry acres, according to the Local Heritage Collection of the Barmera Berri Council, Berri Barmera & Districts
A big government boarding house was one of the first places built in Monash. It was run by Mr. and Mrs Hoskin and catered for more than 100 men(4).
Albert is memorialised on the Memorial Gateway in Berri.
