George Smith was a projectionist at a local piucture theatre, Ikin's Picture Palace, in Gunnedah, New South Wales for five years prior to his enlistment in February 1916.
The son of the late George and Elizabeth Smith, of Barber Street, Gunnedah he trained for a few weeks at Rutherford camp before sailing for England with 'Carmichael's Thousand' in the 'Beltana' on 13 May, 1916.
He crossed to France in November 1916 as part of the 9th Machine Gun Company. By the end of the war he had been promoted to Sergeant.
He returned to Australia in September 1919.
