Florence Agnes Manning was born in Bendigo, Victoria in 1889. She moved with her family to Claremont in Western Australia in 1900. She obviously considered herself to be a West Australian as she has captioned a photo of herself with two men as "Three West Australians".
She trained as a nurse at the Perth Hospital and enlisted in the AANS in Egypt in 1915. She served until April 1917 when she married Captain Hugh William Fancourt Mitchell MC (AAMC) and had to resign. He also worked at Perth Hospital before venturing out into general practice in Brookton, WA in 1915.
During her time in Egypt she worked with Staff Nurse Una Hamilton Evans, whom she refers to as "My Una". They are photographed together at work and during their leisure time.
Florence and Hugh had four children – two boys and 2 girls, with one son following in his father’s footsteps by being a doctor.
Hugh’s father, Henry St. John Mitchell, was also a doctor who served in the Australian Navy and Military Expedition Force, Army Medical Corps, during WWI.
Florence died in 1949 and Hugh in 1957 and they are both buried at Springvale Botanical Cemetery in Victoria.
