James was the eldest of 4 children of Patrick Barry (originally from County Clare in Ireland and arrived in Maryborough, QLD in 1875) and Cecilia Larkin (originally from Tasmania). Patrick and Cecilia married in 1885 in Capricornia, QLD and Patrick worked on the Railways as a Lengthsman. Younger brother William Francis Barry served in WWI with 5th Australian Infantry Battalion.
James was a Storeman in Rockhampton, QLD when he enlisted in the AIF in 1915. In his Attestation Papers, James states that he had served 9 years with 3rd Infanty and 15th Australian Light Horse. He married Mary Gertrude Kelly in September 1915 in Rockhampton, QLD.
Returning from War, James lived and worked as a Railway Foreman until Mary's death in 1925. James worked as a Railway Storeman and a Wool Presser in Fitzroy QLD and Rockhampton until he retired in 1945. He died in Rockhampton in 1949 at the age of 61.
