Of 'Aloha' Longnose Point, Sydney, NSW
Only remaining son of Mr. and Mrs. P.J. Evans, of Long Nose Point, was born at Arncliffe on December 16, 1891, and educated at the William Street Superior Public School and the Sydney Collegiate School. He joined the reporting staff of the Sydney Morning Herald in May, 1911. He left at the end of the following year, and after a year or two in Brisbane went in June, 1914, to England, rejoining the staff on his return in May, 1915.
In September, 1916, he enlisted, and was at first attached to the 8th Light Horse. In December of the same year he was transferred to the Australian naval and Military Expeditionary Force and sent to Rabaul. He was for three years on the out station of Kaewieng, carrying out patrol and administrative work. He contracted malaria and was finally returned to Australia in the latter part of June, 1919, after having been promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer.
MR. W. R. EVANS DEAD
SYDNEY, Sunday.
Mr. Walter Roy Evans. 44, a well known Sydney journalist, died suddenly this morning at his home in Ruth Street Naremburn. Mr. Evans was employed on the staff of the "Sydney Morning Herald" before the outbreak of war and later went to London, where he joined the staff of the Anstralian Press Association. At the outbreak of war he went to New Guinea with the A.I.F.. and later returned to Sydney, where he was engaged in publicity work by J. and H. Tait. In 1921, he joined the "Daily Telegraph", staff, and later held executive positions on "Truth" in Melbourne and Adelaide. He recently returned to the "Daily Telegraph," where he was employed, at the time of his death.
He was President of the Press Club for two years, and was a foundation member of the Australian Journalists' Association. He is survived by a widow and a daughter.
