From How We Served
The final resting place for; - 22984 & V91382 Lyle Clifford Falls of Richmond and Caulfield, Victoria who at the time of his enlisting for War Service on the 24th of September 1917 had been studying as a wireless student.
Having just turned 18, Lyle was allocated to Signals August 1918 Reinforcements, and was embarked for Egypt and further training on the 14th of September 1918, and disembarked on the 9th of October.
With the War in the desert near it]s conclusion, Lyle was taken on strength with the 1st Signal Squadron 1st AIF, and aside a slight bout of sickness, and a short period of Leave, Lyle’s service in the field would be continuous until his turn for repatriation back to Australia came on the 20th of May 1919.
Having returned to Australia, Lyle received his official discharge from the 1st AIF for his re-entry into civilian life on the 22nd of August 1919.
Following the outbreak of another world war, Lyle again presented himself for service with the Australian Military Forces, when he re-enlisted on the 10th of October 1942.
Accepted for full time duty, Lyle was appointed the Commissioned rank of Lieutenant and was formally taken on strength with the 9th Garrison Battalion on the 13th of November, and would remain with this Unit, until he was transferred over to the 12th Garrison Battalion in October 1943.
On the 28th of September 1944, Lyle was posted to the 19th Australian Works Company with which Lyle’s service would be continuous throughout the rest of the War, until he was evacuated sick to the 115th Australian General Hospital (Heidelberg) on the 15th of October 1945.
Whilst still under treatment, Lyle succumbed to illness on the 4th December 1945 at the premature age of 46.
Following his passing whilst still serving with the Australian Military Forces, ‘Great War’ veteran, Lieutenant Lyle Falls, who had chosen to serve Australia during a Second World War, was formally laid to rest within Springvale War Cemetery, Victoria.
