His unit embarked from Melbourne on board HMAT A19 Afric on 5 January 1916 and left Alexandria on 14 March 1916, arriving at Marsailles on 23 March, where they proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force. Matthew was hospitalised for a week with influenza in early October, rejoining his unit on 7 October. He sustained trench foot and was admitted to the 3rd General Hospital, being discharged from Burford Hospital on 23 January 1917. Matthew was treated for venereal disease from 13 April until 18 June and returned to his unit in France from Southampton on 15 August.
On 27 February 1918 he was admitted to the 1st Southern General Hospital in Birmingham, England as he had fallen on his elbow while playing football. The elbow had been fractured, necessitating hospitalisation in England. His mother was advised of the injury on 5 April. Matthew transferred to Field Artillery and returned to France on 27 October. He served with the 2nd / 6th Field Artillery Brigade in April.
Matthew returned to Australia on the Runic on 27 April 1919 and was discharged on 1 August 1919. He served in World War Two, his service number being S212593. Matthew died on 27 June 1943.
