Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

3017 Sergeant Thomas Braithwaite, 2nd Light Horse Regiment (later 42nd Battalion) had two periods of service. He was a labourer of Swan Hill, Queensland, prior to enlisting in the 2nd Light Horse Regiment with the service number 928 on 30 December 1914, and he embarked from Newcastle, NSW, on 22 May 1915 for Gallipoli. Serving at Anzac from August 1915, he developed enteric fever and was hospitalised in Malta prior to returning to Australia in February 1916 where he was attached to 1 Military District in Sydney for recuperation. He then enlisted in the 42nd Battalion and embarked from Sydney, NSW, during February 1917. Following some training courses, he joined his battalion in the Western Front, France, during July 1917. Sergeant Braithwaite died of wounds received in action near Ypres, Belgium, on 16 October 1917.

Age 28, he was the son of Mrs. Alice Turnbull of Weeton, Kirkham, Preston, England. His mother Alice filled out his roll of honour form stating he had come to Australia during 1911, and that his brother, Private John Turnbull, had been killed with the Australian Machine Gun Corps on 16 September 1916.
