Younger son of Hon. William Arthur Calander A'BECKETT
A. H. a'BECKETT was taken on strength of 4th Light Horse as Captain on 2nd October 1915 and took part in operations at Anzac from 1st
October to 5th December 1915. Having returned to Egypt, he was on 26th June 1916 appointed to command a squadron, and having on 1st July been granted temporary rank of Major whilst commanding Squadron of double Squadron Unit was on 23rd July posted to command 3rd Double Squadron.
He took part in operations with E.E.F. from July 1916 to August
1917, relinquishing temporary rank of Major on 22nd December 1916 on ceasing to command Dismounted Squadron.
Having rejoined 4th Light Horse on 15th February 1917 for duty, he
was taken on its strength as Captain, but on 25th February 1917 was seconded for duty with 4th Light Horse Training Regiment to command (temporarily). Having returned to Australia his
appointment was terminated on 11th October 1917.
Major Arthur Hayward a'Beckett, of Ballintrae, Bunyip, who died yesterday at the age of 71 years, was the younger son of the late Hon. William Arthur Calander a'Beckett. He was born at Narre Warren.
Mrs. a'Beckett died in December last.
In England Major a'Beckett was a captain in the Antrim Artillery. He came to Australia before the war and enlisted with the A.I.F., and was at the landing at Gallipoli. He left Australia as a lieutenant
and returned as a major in 1919.
The remains will be cremated at the Springvale Crematorium tomorrow afternoon. The cortege will leave Sleight's chapel, St. Kilda road, at 2.15 p.m.
A service will be conducted by the Bishop of Gippsland (Dr. Cranswick) and the Rural Dean of Warragul (the Rev. C. Woodhouse) at the crematorium chapel at 3 p.m.
