William Clement Shackell CLYDESDALE was born on 26th March, 1888 in Omaru, Otago, New Zealand
His parents were Alexander Matthew CLYDESDALE and Margaretta Young HAY who were both born in Scotland and married on 16th March, 1876 in Omaru, Otago, New Zealand - they had 10 known children all born in New Zealand
He married Elizabeth Maria PEARSON on 9th August, 1909 in Dunedin, New Zealand - 1 son Clement Shackell Heath CLYDESDALE
William first enlisted (SN 1125) in Liverpool, NSW on 3rd Nov 1914 & was with the 13th Battalion & was discharged on 9th December, 1914 & crossed off the roll as medically unfit - he had previous service with the Wakari Rifles in New Zealand (Full service)
His 2nd enlistment ( SN1995) was on 19th January, 1915 & was with the 2nd Tropical Force - he returned to Australia on 31st January, 1916 and was discharged on 14th August, 1916
His 3rd enlistment (SN6981) was on 22nd August, 1916 in Sydney where he was a Private on 29th August, 1916 in the 14 Depot School - he was an Acting Corporal for the voyage only on the ship Benalla which embarked on 9th November, 1916 with the 3rd Infantry Battalion
William was Killed in Action on 15th April, 1917 & was buried in an isolated grave on the side of the track, 1 mile from Hermies - he was re-interred at the Beaumetz Cross Roads Cemetery in France
Inscription reads:
"SACRED TO MEMORY OF MY DEAR HUSBAND, EVER REMEMBERED"
His name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial and the New Zealand WW1 Roll of Honour.
He was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal & the Victory Medal.

His brother Albert Daniel Duncan CLYDESDALE served with the NZ Military and was also Killed in Action on 25th May, 1918
