Conviction and custodial sentence

On Sunday the 26 October 1941, Brisbane's Truth newspaper (pp.18-19)reported that Bennett was, in the previous week, sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for "a dastardly offence" against a boy that Bennett had lawfully adopted with the full endorsement of the-then State Children's Department.

The Truth quoted J Philp characterising Bennett as "a monster" before his sentencing.
