56 years ago today, on the 22nd September 1967, Gunner John Francis Herivel, 1st Australian Medium Trench Mortar Battery (Reg No-28964), labourer from Coolongolook, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 72. CATHOLIC 2-30A. 128.

Born at Waratah, New South Wales on the 28th January 1895 to Peter George and Charlotte Herivel nee Griffith; husband of Ada May Herivel nee Agnew (married 1950, Lambton, N.S.W., died 9.8.1986, buried 21.11.1986, age 80, sleeping here), John enlisted on the 19th May 1916 at Waratah, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A30 Borda on the 17th October 1916.

Wounded in action - 15.7.1917 (laceration left hand).

Admitted to hospital 6.8.1917 (not stated).
John returned home on the 6th June 1919, being discharged on the 14th July 1919.

Mr. Herivel’s name has been inscribed on the Coolongolook & District Honour Roll and the Waratah-St Philip's Anglican Church Roll of Honour.

I have placed poppies at John’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
