Roy Gordon BARRACK, (Service Number 3492) was born in Erskineville on 12 July 1892. From February 1913 he had a varied career with the NSW Railways and Tramways around Sydney, as a cleaner with the Electric Tramway branch, a labourer in the same branch, and then as a porter in the Traffic Branch of the Railways where he, clerically at least, climbed through the grades until April 1917. However, he had been granted leave to join the Expeditionary Forces in August 1915 and had been dead for nearly two years by the date of these entries on his record card.
After enlisting at Alexandria, he embarked from Australia on HMAT ‘Euripides’ on 2 November and reached Egypt by December where he was admitted to hospital with mumps. He was promoted to Corporal in May 1916 at Ismalia and Sergeant the following month at Moascar. He was then transported through Alexandria and Marseilles to France. He was reported wounded in action on July 19, but this was changed to wounded and missing in November. A Court of Enquiry in February 1917 ruled that he had in fact been killed in action on the date of his disappearance at Fromelles, Fleurbaix.
His name is recorded at VC Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial, Fromelles, Lille, Nord Pas de Calais.
