Leslie was the sixth of seven children of Henry (Harry) David Austin (born 1856 in York, Western Auistralia) and Amelia Ann Nelson (born 1867 in York, Western Australia). Leslie's two older brothers - Henry Ernest and Edward Ruthven also served in WWI, Henry KIA in France in 1918.
Leslie was a 17 year old Farm labourer in York, Western Australia when he enlisted in the AIF, stating his age as 21 years. He served initially as a Private with 28th Battalion 7th Reinforcements, then as a Trooper with the 10th Light Horse Regiment (Service No: 3772). Leslie was Discharged in September 1919.
Returning to Western Australia, Leslie married Myrtle Fielding Edmiston (born 1898 in Fremantle, WA) in 1920 and they settled in Northam, Western Australia. Leslie was a Farmer in Narrogin, WA then moved to Cottelsoe, WA by 1949 where he was a Greenkeeper. He and Myrtle retired to Alfred Cove in Western Australia in 1959, where Leslie died in 1981 and Myrtle in 1985
