Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board
Thomas Joseph (‘Joe’) FLYNN (Service Number 138) was born in Albury in 1888, and educated at St John’s School, Darlinghurst. He had served an apprenticeship of five years to a saddler in Balmain before he joined the Tramways in 1907 as a conductor, working out of the Rushcutters Bay depot. In 1912 he was promoted to electric tram driver but reduced to conductor for a fortnight in December 1913 owing to some misdemeanour, before being reinstated as a driver. In August 1914 he enlisted in the AIF at Sydney.
He was reported wounded and missing in action at Gallipoli between 25 and 29 April 1915, and subsequently it was determined that he had been killed in action.
He has no known grave but is remembered with honour on the Lone Pine Memorial. War pensions were granted to his widowed mother and an ex-nuptial child.

Private Joseph Thomas Flynn, 1st Battalion.
A tram driver from Sydney, NSW prior to enlistment.
Pte Flynn embarked with A Company from Sydney on HMAT Afric #OTD in 1914.
After being initially declared as wounded and missing in action, a later Court of Enquiry determined that he had been killed in action at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, aged 26.
He is commemorated on the Lone Pine Memorial.
