Mr John Henry Stokes was a quiet and hard working man in the Branxton area, he did not marry. Sadly thru a lack of education he was not able to read or write. His enlistment papers show a X for his mark.

There is no parents listed on the death certificate.

A man of mystery, his age at enlistment does not correspond with his age at death. John Henry enlisted in Aug 1915 and his age is shown as 29yrs, but when he died 24years later the death certificate shows 65yrs.

A cross was placed today at the unmarked grave of Private John Henry Stokes, 18th Battalion (Reg No-3673), farmer from East Branxton, New South Wales, laid to rest at Branxton Catholic Cemetery (old section), Station Street, Branxton, N.S.W. Row D, Plot 83, on the 2nd July 1939, age 65.

Wounded in action - 4.8.1916 (GSW leg, slight).
Admitted to hospital 23.12.1917 (diarrhoea), 5.2.1918 (diphtheria), 24.2.1918 (scabies), 7.3.1918 (not stated), 24.3.1918 (trench fever, slight).

John returned home August 1918, being discharged medically unfit (myalgia) on the 27th August 1918.
Mr. Stokes’s name has been inscribed on the Branxton Memorial Rotunda and the Bolwarra Public School Roll of Honour.

I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque to be placed at the gravesite to restore Honour and Dignity to this 1st A.I.F. Digger.
