Life Before the War

Arthur Montague Browning was born in the year 1876 in Riverton, South Australia and served in World War I. Arthur Montague Browning had a sister called Miss Myrtle Beatrice Browning and they lived on Childers Street, North Adelaide south Australia. He worked as a station hand, suggesting he probably moved around between workplaces. Prior to his service, Browning had no record of military service before his first enlisting in 1916.

Life in Service

Arthur enlisted on 1 March 1916 and was placed into the 43rd Battalion. He embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on board HMAT A19 Afric on 9 June. Unfortunately, he became ill and was put ashore at Albany in Western Australia. After recovering, he embarked again on 10 October 1916, this time with the 44th Battalion. However, after training in England he was again moved into the 43rd Battalion in February 1917.

After arriving in France he was repeatedly either ill in hospital or overstaying leave and suffering punishment. In September 1917 the decision was made to return him to Australia for discharge owing to debility. He was discharged from the AIF on 25 January 1918.

Browning died on the 10th of September 1950 at the age of 74. Browning is buried in the AIF Cemetery (Row 8, Grave 31), West Terrace, Adelaide South Australia.
