Pte Francis George BARKER
Born Devon England. Son of Elija & Jane Barker of Rocky Cape. A butcher from Penguin. Enlisted 2/5/17 12th Battalion in Ulverstone. RTA 31/7/18. Received a gunshot wound to right arm which was amputated. Died 28/11/57. Plaque in Hobart Garden of Remembrance.

Frank was the seventh of ten children of Elijah Barker (b1851 in Norfolk, England) and second wife Jane Hales (nee Allen; b1864 in Port Cygnet, Tasmania). Elijah immigrated in 1855, arriving in Launceston, Tasmania on board the Whirlwind. In 1887 Elijah (a Farmer) was a Widower with two surviving children when he and Jane (a Widow with one son) married in Emu Bay, Tasmania.
Frank was working as a Butcher in Penguin, Tasmania in 1917 when he enlisted in the AIF. He served with 12th Infantry Battalion (Private; Serviice No:7698) in France where he was WiA in April 1918 - GSW to the right leg and arm (his arm was amputated). Frank was Discharged in August 1920.
Frank returned to Montumana, Tasmania, where he is listed in the Electoral Rolls as an 'Incapcitated Soldier'. In 1926 he married Frances Sarah Viney (b1894 in Meander Valley, Tasmania) in North Motton, Tasmania - Sarah was working as a Saleswoman in Hobart. Frank and Sarah settled in Ulverstone, Tasmania where Frank worked as a Council Inspector. He died in 1957 and Sarah in 1959.
