Charles Oakley ERWOOD was born in Echuca, Victoria in 1880
His parents were Edward George ERWOOD & Margaret Ann OAKLEY who married in Victoria in 1871 - his father was born in London
He first served in the Boer War (SN 175) with the 5th Western Australian Mounted Infantry Contingent before he enlisted for WW1 at Blackboy Hill Military Camp in Western Australia on 27th April, 1915 and embarked from Fremantle, WA with the 11th Infantry Battalion, 6tth reinforcements on board the HMAT Geelong on 6th June 1915
He was promoted to Lance Corporal on 4th April, 1917 and to Corporal on 2nd May, 1917
He was wounded in action at Gallipoli on 11th August, 1915 and again on 10th August, 1918 with multiple gun shot wounds
Charles died at the 55th Casualty Clearing Station on 11th August, 1918 and is buried in the Daours Communal Cemetery Extension--Plot III, Row E, grave 39

His brother Robert Henry ERWOOD (SN 2049) was killed in action on 21st August, 1916 and his sister Kathleen ERWOOD also served as a Nurse in WW1 and returned to Australia in 1918
