Charles made his debut on 2 May 1914. He played 2 games between 1914 and 1920. W.T. Kelly’s History of West Adelaide Football Club (page 45), states Charles showed great promise.
Biographical details:
Charles was the son of Charles and Margaret Bender ( nee Donnelly). He left Australia on 15 June 1915. He was later hospitalised in Mudros, on the Greek island of Lemnos, with jaundice. His unit was sent to France on 5 August, where he was severely gassed at Villers-Bretonneux,on 25 April 1918. Upon receiving treatment, he was discharged from the 12th General Hospital on 14 May. Charles returned to Australia on the Port Lytlleton on 10 June 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on 20 October 1919. He received the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal on 27 March 1924. After the war Charles resided at 15 Durden Road, Lower Mitcham. Charles died on 24 February 1959.
