OBITUARY
MR. EDWARD BUSE ADAMS
Veteran of Two Wars
The many friends of Mr. E. B. Adams, of Bridport, will regret to learn of his death in Launceston on Tuesday last. Mr. Adams served in two wars; he was exceptionally well known and highly esteemed, and his demise will be sincerely regretted. The late Mr. Adams was a man of vision, and it was due to his untiring energy and perseverance that some 30 years ago a cut was put through the sand dunes at Bridport, making an outlet for the Foreater river, draining a large area of rich agricultural land. It was due to his fore-sight that during the critical war years a large quantity of much-needed foodstuffs was grown on areas which he was responsible for having drained and made available for culti-vation. His two sons served in the last war, and two of his three daughters were also in the services. Sincere sympathy will be felt for them and Mrs. Adams, who are left to mourn their loss. The funeral will take place at Carr Villa this afternoon.
Born at Pipers River in 1874, Edward Buse Adams left school at aged 13 and began working on his father's farm. At the outbreak of the Anglo Boer War, Edward joined the Tasmanian Bushmen and saw the campaign through. On his return, he took up land known as Jerusalem Plains, which he successfully drained. Later he conceived the idea of draining a large area of swamp land on the Great Forester River. With little assistance from the Government, Edward and his brother successfully carried out the drainage scheme, thereby reclaiming a large area of fertile flats including Barnbougie and Wonder Valley.
Another of Edward's plans was the building of a causeway over the estuary of the Forester near Bridport, which would enclose a large area of freshwater.
In 1916, Edward went to war on the western front as a member of the 25th Battalion, Seventh Brigade (artillery). He was wounded in France and invalided home in June 1918.
When he passed away in 1946, Edward left a family of two sons and three daughters.
