It appears that Harold's parents, Edward Ballard and Mary J (Marion Janet) Smith were married in 1898 in Narrabri (NSWBDM 8203/1898).

Statement, Red Cross File No 210704, 4775 Pte J. FEEHAN, 54th Bn (patient, Stirchley Hospital, Birmingham, England), 11 November 1916: 'On the 19th of. (sic) July 1916 at Vermelles Ballard was killed, shot whilst advancing beyond the German first line. I saw him shot. We left him there and later on retiring I saw him lying dead in a communication Trench.'
