Son of George Holmes De Vis and Adelaide (Ada) De Vis nee Goodwin of Davis Street, Charters Towers, QLD.

Brother of Charles De Vis MM who returned to Australia on 20 August 1919 having served with the 26th Battalion; Herbert Walter De Vis who returned to Australia on 13 February 1918 having served with the 49th Battalion and Leslie Holmes De Vis who was killed in action on 18 October 1917 while serving with the 42nd Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on Menin Gate, Ypres, Panel 27.

Commenced return to Australia on 12 July 1919 aboard HT City of Essex disembarking on 26 August 1919 at Sydney for onward travel to Brisbane.
