Joseph Beacom was the oldest son of John Beacom, who was one the old pioneers of Kangaroo Valley. John died in 1900 when Joseph was only 16 years of age. Joseph’s mother Elizabeth had five children at the time, and she remarried some four years later.
Joseph was an original Anzac, wounded at Gallipoli 7 August 1915, during the August offensive. He was sent to England for treatment and only returned to duty for a few weeks when he was killed in action in France. He was reported to have been hit in the back by a whizzbang shell at Pozieres. His younger brother 4078 Private David Beacom 25th Battalion was killed in action at Pozieres 5 days earlier, 5 August 1916.
At the time of his death, he owned the Barrengarry farm inherited from his father being approximately 113 acres valued at 350 pounds but there was still 375 pounds owing on the mortgage.
