Son of Henry Underwood and Emma Underwood nee Crook of Oakey, QLD. Brother of Ralph Norman Underwood who returned to Australia on 6 April 1919 having served with the 49th Battalion.
11 January 1916 - Enlisted at Toowoomba, QLD. Rank of Private. 31st Battalion
Commenced return to Australia on 31 Janaury 1918 aboard HT Euripides disembarking on 23 March 1918 at Melbourne for onward travel to Brisbane by train.
4 May 1918 - discharged in Brisbane as medically unfit due to chronic bronchitis and overage
