Henry Jubilee Carter was a soldier during the First World War. He had grey eyes and brown hair. He weighed 134 pounds (61kgs) and had a chest measurement of 33.35 inches. His service number was 1275 and he was born in 1888 in Bowden. He lived on Bagot Street West Thebarton and worked as a station hand in Adelaide before he enlisted in the army.
Henry Carter had one brother and one sister. His sister's name was Mathilda Whyatt who lived on the same street as him and was his next in kin. His brother's name was John Carter, who enlisted prior to his brother Henry. John Carter's service number was 713, and he fought in the 12th Battalion before he was killed in action in Gallipoli on the 25th of April 1915.
Henry Carter decided that he would enlist in the army; this may have been due to the death of his brother in the war a few months before he enlisted. His date of enlistment was on the 13th of July 1915, and his date of embarkation was on the 26th of October 1915, from Melbourne, Victoria, aboard the SS Hawkes Bay.
Carter joined the 11th Light Horse Regiment in Egypt in January 1916 His division was next deployed in Alexandria, Egypt where he would be admitted to hospital for a colon disease which would put him out of action until the 24th of July 1916, by which time he was ready to re-join his regiment.
In July 1916, the 11th Light Horse Regiment, including Henry Carter proceeded up to the Suez Canal and began to train as an Infantry Regiment rather than a Light Horse Regiment. In April 1917 the division moved into Palestine to assist the joint Allied push against to Ottomans, the Regiment saw action for the first time on April 17th at the Second Battle of Gaza, which they lost. The unit fought again on the 31st of October that same year where they attempted one more time to capture Gaza from the Turks, which also failed.
Henry Carter would fortunately not die in the war and would live till the age of 74. He would come to receive 3 military awards. The 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal, and the Victory Medal. He is currently buried at West Terrace Cemetery.
