The eldest of nine children, Bill was born in 1884 in Albany, WA to Dr Percy Hugh Wardell-Johnson (b1860 in Essex, England) and Jessie Beatrice Hustler (b1861 in Port Adelaide, South Australia). Percy and Jessie married in 1883 in Albany, WA. Percy had immigrated in 1869 with his parents and siblings on board the Robert Morrison and lived in York before studying Pharmacy in South Australia and opening a Chemist Shop in Albany in 1881. Percy went to England to study medicine (1891 to 1894) and settled in York before returning to Albany in 1899. Percy moved his family to Perth in 1904 where he was a Medical Practitioner and Chief Medical Officer.
Bill worked as a Greengrocer in Dowerin before becoming a Farmer at Badgerin via Dowerin. Following his Discharge from the AIF, in 1918 Bill married Amy Clara Robinson (b1887 in York, WA). Bill and Amy settled at Burnt Oak in Arthur River where Bill was a Farmer until the late 1930s when he and Amy moved to Maddington.
