Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Albert Begg was the son of Henry Farquharson and Jane Hay Begg, and husband of Jessie Donaldson Begg of Queensland. He had been born in Aberdeen, Scotland and his father was the owner of the Royal Lochnager Distillery until his passing in 1896. Albert had come to Australia during 1912 and his wife said he was a retired Sub-Lieutenant, of the Royal Navy. He was 37 years of age when he enlisted and father to three children, all under 10 years of age, living at Wynnum in Queensland.

Begg was reported missing during the heavy fighting at Mouquet Farm on 3 September 1916. He was said to have been killed the advance, by shell fire, although his death date is recorded as 5 September 1916. During 1923 his remains were discovered, along with his broken identity disc, and he was reinterred in the Bouzincourt Ridge Cemetery.

His brother 7 Corporal John Hay Begg Depot Battalion died of illness on 7 August 1920 in Queensland, aged 52.
