John Charles Barker served twice in the South African (Boer) War, first as a Lance Corporal S.N. 144 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, and second as a Private S.N. 668 in the 6th Queensland Bushmen. (source AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray p. 470 and 519- see note bottom of page).

He would go on to serve again in WW1 as a Private S.N. 3251 in the 9th Infantry Battalion AIF. (source National Archives Australia WW1 service records).
