Son of Joseph Upchurch and Jane Upchurch of Hamilton, Tasmania. Brother of James William Upchurch who died of wounds on 30 November 1917 while serving with the 59th Battalion and was buried in the Trois Arbres Cemetery, Plot 11, Row B, Grave 29.
Served a five Joinery apprenticeship with R.H. Stabb & Son of Hobart, Tasmania.
10 October 1916 - enlisted at Claremont, Tasmania with the 15 Field Artillery Brigade with the rank of Gunner.
27 August 1917 - transferred to the 14th Field Artillery
6 November 1917 - gassed
Commenced return to Australia on 8 July 1919 aboard Friedrichsruh disembarking on 1 September 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Tasmania
Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal
18 September 1919 - discharged at the 6 Military District
