"SAWYER. — On December 22, Henry James Sawyer, dearest loved husband of Abi, and loving father of Elliott, Freddie, Betty and Valmai. So sadly missed."from the Port Lincoln Times 06 Jan 1939 (nla.gov.au)

"Death of Henry James Sawyer. AN APPRECIATION FROM THE POONINDIE SCHOOL CHILDREN

Mr. Henry James Sawyer, who died at Poonindie on December 22, was a grandson of the original Joseph Sawyer, at one time owner of Spilsby Island. His father left Port Lincoln in his younger days and was for years in the Adelaide Hills, but later came back to the district and purchased land on the banks of the Tod River, where he was successful with gardening and dairying. The late Henry James Sawyer carried on the same industry after his father's death. He left a widow, two sons (Elliot and Fred) and two daughters (Betty and Valmai). Mr. Sawyer was a comparatively young man. The following is an appreciation from the Poonindie school children: — "It was in shocked surprise that we scholars of the Poonindie School learnt of the death of one of our most zealous committee members. The deceased was well known and respected throughout the district and has been on our committee for some years. It has been a pleasure to note his enthusiasm and activities in all school functions, picnics, euchre parties, etc., and we cannot forget the numerous gifts of fruit and sweets we have received from him. Perhaps we children realise more fully than most of the adults in the district, his true   character and many kindnesses. We   deeply regret that Mr. Sawyer was   called "home" at such a time, when rejoicing was the order of the season. We convey our most heartfelt sympathy to his widow and children." - from the Port Lincoln Times 06 Jan 1939 (nla.gov.au)
