The son of Anthony and Annie Barnes; and husband of Frances Catherine Barnes, of Subiaco, Western Australia. He died at Pozieres just short of 40th birthday.

His younger brother, 3118 Pte. George Herbert Barnes, also of the 51st Battalion was killed in action a year later on 26 August 1917, aged 32.
