Died on this date - 1st May.......Private Joshua Haddon Fenton was born at Woollahra, Sydney, NSW in 1891. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 3rd January, 1916 as a 24 year old Librarian from Ashfield, Sydney, NSW.
Private Fenton arrived in England on 26th October, 1916 with Army Medical Corps having been admitted to Ship's Hospital with Measles from 7th-21st October.
Private Fenton was posted to 15th Field Ambulance in France on 26th February, 1917.
Private Fenton was wounded in action on 7th May, 1917 with GSW to head. He was admitted to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station on 7th May, 1917 & discharged to duty at 15th Field Ambulance on 19th May, 1917.
Private Fenton was wounded in action again on 21st September, 1917 with GSW to shoulder. He was invalided to England & admitted to Shorncliffe Military Hospital, England on 24th September, 1917. He was discharged to furlo on 12th December, 1917 & was then to report to Command Depot at Hurdcott, Wiltshire.
Private Fenton returned to France & rejoined 15th Field Ambulance on 26th February, 1918.
Private Fenton was wounded in action - Gas on 17th April, 1918. He was invalided to England & admitted to Voluntary Aid Hospital, Cheltenham, England on 22nd April, 1918 – Gassed – severe.
Private Joshua Haddon Fenton died at 5 pm on 1st May, 1918 at St. John’s Hospital, Cheltenham (some forms in the Service Record file name the Hospital as “Cheltenham Area Hospital”), England from wounds – Gassed. He was buried in Cheltenham Cemetery, Gloucestershire, England where 9 other WW1 Australian Soldiers are buried.
