Son of Arthur J. Viles and Mary I. Viles of Nowraine Street, Summer Hill, NSW. Brother of John Viles who returned to Australia on 1 June 1919 having served in the 18th Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 25 January 1919 aboard HT Ceramic disembarking on 14 March 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Sydney.
