Son of William Edman and Mary Ann Abbott, 90 Ramsay Road, Haberfield, Sydney, New South Wales. Brother of 1516 Ernest William Abbott killed in action 20 July 1916 at Frommelles, Charles Frederick Abbott and George Robert Harbour Abbott. Herbert also had three sisters, Alice Elizabeth Jane Abbott, born 1885, Elsie Emma Abbott, born 1887, and Gertrude Abbott, born in 1897 and Herbert's twin.
