"Son of Wiliam DOWNING and Ester nee LEWIS of Harrogate. He embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT Warilda on 10 February 1916 with the 14th Reinforcements and served for a short time in Egypt before transferring to the 54th Battery of the 14th Field Artillery Brigade in March 1916. Howard then saw action on the Western Front and was promoted to Bombardier (Bdr) in August 1918. He was wounded in action (gassed) in September 1918 and repatriated to England. Howard returned to Australia aboard HMAT Lancashire arriving on 26 March 1919 and was discharged on 20 May 1919." - SOURCE (sa.ww1anzac.com)
"Grazier Dies At The Wheel Of His Motor Lorry
While taking a load of wool yesterday from Harrogate to Adelaide, via Mount Barker, Howard William Lewis Downing, 35, a grazier, of Harrogate, collapsed at the wheel of his motor lorry when about a mile from Mount Barker. He was accompanied by his wife and brother-in-law. Mrs. Downing stopped the lorry. Mr Downing was a prominent member of the Southern Stockowners' Sheep Show Society, and was a successful exhibitor of stud Merino sheep at the shows conducted by the society. He was also a member of the pastoral committee of the Mount Barker Agricultural Society and of the Mount Barker sub-branch or the R.S.A.
