Charles was the son of Gustav Frederick and Maria Bertha Menz[nee Heinrich] Charles, [ listed as Carl Fredrich in the South Australian Births Index of Registrations), didhis basic training at Mitcham Camp with the 13u, Training Battalion. He attended the School of Musketry Trainingat Cheltenham. His unit left from Fremantle aboard HMAT A16 Port Melbourne on 23 October 1916. Upon completion of further training in England, his unit, the SO"' Battalion / 6th Reinforcement, was sent to France on 9 May
1917, where they fought at the Battle of Messines from June 7. Charles was killed in action on 9 June at Messines and was buried three- quarters of a mile from Messines. In his will, lodged with J.R.Sobels of Eudunda, Charles left his possessions to his mother Marla, who was granted a pension of two pounds per fortnight as of 2 September 1917.
