George was the son of George and Emma Liersch [nee Krahe] of Seppeltsfield.
George embarked Ivernia bound for England on 11 April 1916. He sustained a
fracture of the right foot which necessitated 2 weeks in hospital in late
August. He rejoined his unit on 7 September after which they were sent to
France on 28 February 1917. George was again hospitalised, this time with
mumps on 4 March and was able to resume duty on 24 March. He was
“despatched to England as advisable in the exigencies of the service, being of
enemy extraction” on 12 October.1
This may serve to explain why several
soldiers eg. Glatz and Renner enlisted under a pseudonym. On 27 October he
was transferred to the 1st Anzac Wireless Section in France where he served
out the remainder of the war. George returned to Australia on the Anchises on
23 August 1919 and was discharged on 28 November.
