Robert Ernest SALTER was born as Robert Ernest ROYLE on 27th September, 1886 in St Marys, Tasmania although he stated he was only 25 when he enlisted which is incorrect
His parents were Thomas ROYLE and Eliza Ann SALTER - Eliza was the daughter of Isaac SALTER & Eliza MUMBY who were both convicts to Tasmania - she did not marry Thomas ROYLE & had many other children in Tasmania
He enlisted in Claremont Tasmania on 8th February, 1916 & embarked with the 40th Infantry Battalion, B Company on the ship Berrima
He returned to Australia on 30th April, 1919 & was discharged on 14th August, 1919
Robert died in St Marys, Tasmania on 3rd August, 1958
