SN 9 Mechanical Transport Driver Henry Lloyd Fitzmaurice Harkin of Chiltern and Prahran, Victoria had been employed as a motor mechanic at the time of his enlistment for War Service on the 13th of March 1916. Henry was allocated to the newly formed 1st Armoured Car Section,1st AIF (later redesignated as the 1st Light Car Patrol) and embarked for Egypt and further training on the 20th of June.
Henry's service was continuous throughout the Middle East campaign during the desert fighting against the Turks, and he had gone through the whole of his time with the 1st AIF, prior to the end of the War, without being wounded or sent home ill.
On the 16th of April 1919, whilst awaiting to be returned to Australia, Henry suffered his first attack of malaria and was hospitalised at Moascar. Henry embarked as an invaild suffering malarial debility on the 29th of April, and whilst at sea he was again hospitalised and diagnosed as suffering influenza.
Henry's health only further deteriorated following his return to Australia and after having been discharged from the 1st AIF. On the 18th of Janurary,1922 Henry succumbed to his war service caused illness at the age of 24, and was laid to rest within Brighton General Cemetery, Victoria.
