Alfred was the father of three sons who enlisted in the AIF. He himself enlisted at almost fifty years of age in the Australian Remount Unit, six months after his young son, 180 Corporal Guy Alfred Briggs 12th Battalion AIF, had been killed at the Anzac landing on Gallipoli. His other two sons were 1047 Sergeant Leonard Briggs M.M. 26th Battalion AIF and Lieutenant Edgar Charles Briggs 12th Battalion AIF.
Alf was a saddler in Longford, Tasmania served as military saddler. He didn’t return from the Middle East until July 1918. His health was somewhat impaired, as he suffered several bouts of debility while on service. The father of twelve children, he passed away in Longford during January 1921.
