"Military Medal. SGT. W. L. O'CONNOR, M.M.
Sgt. W. L. O'Connor, who was recently awarded the Military Medal, is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice O'Connor, of Meningie. Prior to his enlistment he was in the clerical division of the S. A. Railways Department, and by his geniality, uprightness, and unassuming ways, won many friends. Lieut. Marnden (officer in charge of his battalion), in a letter dated August 21, stated:-
"Wallie O'Connor won the Military Medal at the Messines fight for consistent good work and bravery under heavy fire. He deserved it thoroughly, and I can tell you he has turned up trumps. No granting of an honour has given so much satisfaction. His boys swear by him, and his officers cannot say too much for him. He is as cool as a cucumber under the heaviest fire, and I can tell you it has been heavy. With it all, Wallie remained as unassuming as ever." - from the Adelaide Observer 10 Nov 1917 (nla.gov.au)
