| 23 Aug 1918: | Honoured Military Medal, AFC / RFC operations Western Front / Middle East, Military Medal 'For most distinguished gallantry during the operations near BRAY SUR SOMME on 22nd/23rd August, 1918. Sergeant BLACKADDER was in charge of the Regimental transport. He led his teams over exposed and very heavily shelled country with the greatest resourcefulness and courage. In spite of heavy machine gun fire he took hot food and 20,000 rounds of S.A.A. up to the front line and himself saw to the distribution. These supplies reached our advanced troops at a critical and anxious time. Returning from the front line he searched for wounded and brought them back in his limbers to the R.A.P. The value of Sergeant BLACKADDER's cannot be overestimated. He displayed great courage, coolness and sound judgment. His splendid conduct and leadership inspired his men with the greatest confidence.' Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 109 Date: 15 September 1919 |
