22 Jan 1917:	Honoured Military Medal, Corporal (Tempy. Sergeant) Herbert Clarence THOMAS 'On 7th November, 1916, this N.C.O. was in charge of a party carrying a severely wounded man from RUNNERS POST to Headquarters at THISTLE DUMP, near BAZENTIN LE GRAND. When an enemy shell exploded alongside the party, kiling the patient, 2 bearers, and wounding 4 others, his coolness, courage and resource was beyond praise; he dressed the wounded, and secured their immediate removal to Headquarters. By his prompt action he saved the life of at least one of the wounded men. This N.C.O. is at all times characterised by excellent work, great devotion to duty, and splendid courage.' 23 Jan 1917:	Promoted AIF WW1, Sergeant, 6th Field Ambulance, Had been promoted to Temporary Sergeant from 21st October 1916.
12 Dec 1917:	Honoured Military Medal and bar, Sergeant Hubert Clarence THOMAS M.M. 'This N.C.O. went on duty night of 25th/26th September, 1917 and moved up to POLYGON WOOD near Ypres with his Bearers on night 26th/27th September, 1917 From HOOGE CRATER. Finding that the R.A.P. had moved forward without leaving directions he placed his men in safety and went out under Machine Gun and heavy shell fire and located the 60th Battalion R.A.P. after much difficulty and being hit three times by pieces of shell. He then went back to his men, led them up, and was the means of evacuating wounded who had been lying there for 35 hours. It was due to his courage entirely that the line of evacuation was re-established and the wounded got away.' O.C. 6th Aust. Field Ambulance
