Biography

Sarsfield ANDREWS was born on 15th March, 1882 in Mount Gambier (the SA births states a place called The Sandpits)

His parents were Joseph BROOKS and Elizabeth ANDREWS - His foster father was William George ANDREWS

He enlisted on 17th August 1915 with the Australian Army - he was with the 10th Battalion, 13th reinforcements - unit embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT Borda on 11th January, 1916

In  late February 1916 he was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front in early June.  He was hospitalised on 3 occasions with influenza related illnesses

Sarsfield was Killed in Action in the Field on 27th September, 1917 at Zomebeke, Belgium - He was buried in an unmarked grave near Westhoek near Zomebeke and is honoured on the Ypres (Menin Gate Memorial, The Australian War Memorial & the Rendelsham War Memorial in South Australia - he was awarded the British War Medal & the Victory Medal.

THE LATE PRIVATE ANDREWS

Mr. & Mrs. Andrews of Rendelsham have been notified that their son, Private Sarsfield (Rod) Andrews was killed on September 27. He is the first of the Rendelsham boys to lose his life.  He enlisted in August 1915 and sailed for Egypt in January, 1916. He left for France in June 1916.  He was just over 35 years old and was educated at the Rendelsham Public School. He spent nearly all his life in the South East. He was a great favourite with young and old.  A brother, Private Alf. Andrews is still at the front.
