Add my storyBiography contributed by Edmund PUEBLAS
Frederick Percival Graham Barns was born on 11 November 1888 in Colton, South Australia, located between Venus Bay and Elliston. Despite his birthplace, Frederick spent most of his childhood in the seaside town of Streaky Bay. Before enlisting in the AIF, Frederick worked as a Farmer, a common occupation in the area. His enlistment papers nominated his mother, Mrs. Doretta Barns, as his next of kin. Frederick was raised in a Christian household and was a member of the Church of England.
On 14 August 1915, at age 26 years and 8 months old, Frederick enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force. This enlistment marked a significant point in his life as he transitioned from a peaceful farming existence to the dangers and challenges of military service.
Frederick enlisted for the AIF at Keswick, Adelaide, South Australia. At 6 feet 0.25 inches, he was taller than the average height of 5 feet 9 inches for men at the time. His enlistment records also noted his weight of 195 lbs, marital status as single.
Frederick was placed into the 3rd Light Horse Regiment (LHR), 14th Reinforcement. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia, on 10 February 1916 aboard the HMAT A69 Warilda to Egypt. Barns proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force 6th June 1916 disembarking in Marseilles France a week later.
Throughout his service in the AIF, he was promoted. To Sergeant 10th March 1917, then 2nd Lieutenant 24th November 1917 and Lieutenant 1st April 1918.
Barns departed England 22nd November 1919 to return to Australia arriving 12 January 1920, having spent four years overseas participating in these operations and campaigns.
On the 9th July 1920, Frederick Percival Graham Barns was discharged from the AIF.
Sadly, his life came to an end, passing away in 1979, and his grave is at Centennial Park Cemetery, Adelaide.
