'Frank' Thomas was born in Daylesford and was a 20-year-old single Farmer living in Ascot, near Ballarat, when he enlisted in Ballarat on 17 July 1915. He had two years in the Cadets and was serving in the 19th ALH on enlistment. In Egypt on 3 March 1916 Frank was transferred to the newly raised 29 Coy AASC, but shortly after was transferred back to 18 Coy where his mates were. Apart from suffering Laryngitis and the ‘flu while in Egypt, Frank Thomas had a ‘lucky war’, not being wounded or gassed. Driver Thomas returned to Australia on 8 May 1919 on the Troopship Devanha and was discharged on 15 August 1919 from the AIF on his Termination of the Period of Enlistment.
