Born in Glenrowan, Francis Henry Gordon Simcocks was a Clerk in the Department of Home Affairs when he enlisted on 3 March 1916. He was aged 22 years and 10 months at the time of enlistment and in addition to his Next of Kin, his enlistment form against Next of Kin was stamped “also notify Works & Railways, Melbourne”
He was appointed to the No 14 Australian General Hospital A.I.F. on 15 August 1916 and left Melbourne on 19 August 1916 for Suez where he arrived on 20 September 1916. In Egypt he had a period of hospitalisation in March 1917 for nasal obstruction due to cartilage problems which was operated on. On 5 August 1917 he was transferred to the 2nd Light Horse Field Ambulance. In 1918 he contracted malaria and after hospital spent time at ANZAC headquarters and Army Headquarters in Cairo and Moascar. Moascar camp was near the Suez Canal.
He embarked for Australia from Port Said on the Dorset on 29 April 1919. Upon his return he rejoined the Commonwealth Public Service in the Department of Works & Railways but moved to Sydney where a few months later he became engaged.

Miss Marjorie Hunter King, only daughter of Mrs King, of Manly, New South Wales, and the late Captain Andrew Guy King of Wellington, N.Z., to Mr Francis Henry Gordon Simcocks (formerly Australian Imperial Force), L.I.C.A. Accounts Branch, Works and Railways Department, Sydney, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Fred W. Simcocks “Failsworth”, North Carlton.

Francis and Marjorie were married on 21 December 1919. Francis died on 20 August 1952.
