Birth: Born Clarendon, Wagga Wagga, 4 April 1896. Son of William David and Amy Henrietta Carpenter. (Birth Certificate 17189/1896).
Parents: William David Carpenter married Amy Trethiery at Wagga Wagga in 1882 (Reg. No. 5638/1882). They had at least four children:

William Carpenter died in 1911 at Wagga Wagga at the age of 86 (Reg No 3519/1911)
Occupation: Carpenter; had been an apprentice; employed by Charles Hardy and Co?
Associations/organizations: Member of MUIOOF; Anglican Religion.
Previous Military Experience: Served in Australian Field Artillery, Wagga Wagga for one and a half years and senior cadets 4 years. Still serving.
Physical description: 5’9”, 10 stone 11 lbs, 36” chest; dark complexion, brown eyes, black hair.
Enlistment: applied to enlist on 27th November 1915 with the consent of his mother, A.H. Carpenter. Enlisted to serve from 1 December 1915. Attestation dated 29 November 1915 signed by Lt MacLeod. Medical exam on same day by Dr Weedon of Wagga Wagga. Aged 19 years and five months; single. Next of kin was his mother A.H. Carpenter of Collins Street, Wagga Wagga.
Participated in Kangaroo Route March (Wagga-Yass Route March) – a private from 1 December 1915 to 6 February 1916. Corporal from 7 January 1916 to 13 April 1916, B. Company AIF Goulburn Camp.
On the list of Kangaroos in DA 1 December 1915; signed the autograph book as No 66; in the photograph taken at Goulburn.
Service Overseas: embarked on 14 April 1916 on the Ceramic (with 2nd reinforcements, 55th Battalion). Disembarked at Port Said on 16 May 1916
Embarked on Arcadia on 29 July 1916 at Alexandria and disembarked 9 August 1916 at Southampton via Marseilles. Transferred to Overseas training brigade.
Proceeded overseas to France 31 August 1916/9 September 1916
Marched in to 5th Division Base Depot at Etaples on 11 September 1916
Taken on strength of 55th battalion on 23 September 1916.
28 March 1916: Injured his thigh and taken by ambulance to Casualty Clearing Station
6 April 1916: rejoined battalion
8 September 1917 went on leave
10 September 1917 admitted to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital at Southall (PUO) from headquarters whilst on leave
11 October 1917: discharged from hospital and granted balance of leave – to proceed overseas to rejoin unit on 20 October 1917
21 October 1917 rejoined the 55th Battalion
8 March 1918 to 26 March 1918 – on leave
1 November 1918 promoted to corporal
19 January 1919 – on leave in the UK; rejoined battalion on 6 February 1919
9 April 1919: marched out for RTA
10 April 1919 marched out to England
17 April 1919 disembarked Southampton for No 5 Group
2/3 June 1919 embarked on Beltana for return to Australia

Corporal Harold Carpenter and Saddler Charles Box attended welcome home social. About seventy of their relatives attended the welcome home dinner in the Masonic Hall. Mayor E.E. Collins and Archdeacon Pike presided. The tables were amply furnished with delicacies while coloured bunting and flags added a ‘gay appearance’ to the hall. Toasts to the King, Our Guests, The Ladies and the Press were honoured and musical items were contributed by Mr C.F. Raper and Miss Lola Cameron. At the conclusion of the supper the gathering adjourned to the dancing floor where a very enjoyable evening was concluded.
