Cpl 234 Alexander Douglas Bethune fought all through the Boer war, and was later sent to London with the Australian forces to assist in the Coronation of Edward VII.

At the outbreak of the great war he volunteered to serve as a private (later Cpl) and with his brother, Norman McLeod Bethune (who survived The Nek but later died of wounds sustained at Gaza 19 April 1917) went to the Dardanelles with the 8th Light Horse Regiment.
